Five Apps Fight Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies
It has been some time since short-drama apps counted as a fringe curiosity. In Q1 2025, the US accounted for 49% of the roughly $700M in global in-app revenue that Sensor Tower recorded for the category. Full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M. Search a store for a short reels app and you will meet at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, the apps play drama download look identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they shape what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Full Comparison Grid
Ahead of the rounds, take a look at the whole field on one screen. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures listed in the US App Store, though they vary by country, platform and promotion. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. The install numbers are taken from each app’s Google Play listing. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source published the figure, the cell says “not reported”. The grid works as the scoreboard, and the rounds below serve as the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. Backed by China’s COL Group and based in Sunnyvale, Crazy Maple Studio launched it in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. Its 2025 revenue comes to $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA forecasts $1.05B for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already commands about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort holds about 6% and sits just outside this field. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
The apps seem most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave sells a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and every one renews automatically. DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99, and ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Because four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. Country, platform and promotion all affect prices, so the number on your screen may differ. Winner: DramaWave, since its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Free Ways to Watch
The marketing gets loud and the details get thin when it comes to free viewing. The first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, says ReelShort’s own blog, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Keep a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so stay away from them. The winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.
Round 4: Platforms
These apps genuinely diverge over screens. ReelShort runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it streams as well in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app. Thanks to an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. For anyone who only needs a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama claims the living room.
Round 5: Libraries and Original Series
By raw numbers, ShortMax is in a league of its own. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations, and the app now claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and reports say more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, give ReelShort the edge on recognizable hits, and both of them went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama boasts the most intriguing pipeline, as Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Round winner: ShortMax, on pure volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print
DramaWave easily wins this round. Its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync comes in as the next most useful perk for viewers who move between phone and laptop. Since it varies more than the prices do, the fine print deserves a look too. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Verdict
How you watch determines the right choice, since no single short drama app wins every round. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. When it comes to commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. If you want to back the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. With its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels, ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling. If all five tempt you, settle on one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
